Rug fringe repair and edge overcasting

Why fringes and edges wear

Fringes are the continuation of the rug's warp. They are not a decoration sewn on. When they break, the last knots of the design lose their hold and begin to come loose. The edges take friction from the vacuum, the furniture and footsteps. Once they open, the wear moves inward toward the field of the rug.

The signs are clear: loose knots at the ends, fringes of uneven length, an edge that curls, or threads coming out of the side. If you notice any of them, send us a photo and the master will tell you whether it is time to act.

A timely repair is simple. A late repair may call for restoring the design itself. That is why fringes and edges are worth checking at every wash.

Fringe repair

The master chooses the method according to the condition of the warp and the value of the piece:

  • Securing: the last rows of knots are locked with a discreet stitch so the design cannot unravel.
  • New fringe: when the original warp is gone, a cotton or wool fringe in the right tone is applied and sewn by hand.
  • Rebuilding: on fine pieces, warp threads are added and the end knots are rewoven so the fringe grows out of the rug itself again.

Edge overcasting

Edges are overcast by hand with wool dyed to match the original colour. If the edge is broken, the base cord is rebuilt first and then wrapped. The result is a firm, straight edge that protects the rug for years.

We explain with photographs which method we recommend and why. The decision is yours.

Process, pickup and tracking

This repair fits into our seven steps: pickup, diagnosis and photography, deep dusting, washing, centrifuge and controlled drying, restoration and master review, and delivery wrapped and sealed. Washing before repairing reveals the true colour of the wool and lets us choose the exact tone. On arrival at the workshop, the piece receives a KR tracking code and is photographed front and back. You receive new photos when the work is complete.

Pickup and delivery are included at no extra cost in Polanco, Lomas de Chapultepec, Bosques de las Lomas, Tecamachalco, Interlomas, Huixquilucan and the west of the city. To request a quote, send us on WhatsApp a photo of the front, one of the back, a close up of the fringes or edges, the size and your colonia.

Process

Our seven step process

Process
  1. Step 1. Collection

We collect your rug on the agreed date, in Polanco, Las Lomas, Interlomas and the west of the city, at no extra cost. We roll it with care, never folded, and give you its tracking code.

  2. Step 2. Diagnosis and photography

On arrival at the workshop, the master inspects fiber, dyes, foundation, fringes and edges. We photograph front and back, record every detail and share the diagnosis with you before any work begins.

  3. Step 3. Deep dusting

We remove the dust and grit that settle deep in the foundation and wear the fiber down with every footstep. It is the step most often skipped, and the one that most protects the life of a rug.

  4. Step 4. Washing

Wool pieces go through our industrial automatic washer, with abundant water and neutral detergents. Silk and delicate pieces are washed by hand, by the master, with the time each one asks for.

  5. Step 5. Centrifuge and controlled drying

The industrial centrifuge removes water evenly, without twisting or stretching the weave. The rug then dries laid flat in a controlled environment, to prevent odors, shrinkage and dye bleeding.

  6. Step 6. Restoration and the master's review

If the diagnosis called for it and you approved it, the master repairs fringes, edges and weave with wool and technique true to the piece. Before leaving, every rug receives a final review, inch by inch.

  7. Step 7. Wrapped and sealed delivery

We photograph the finished piece, roll it, wrap it and seal it. We deliver it to your home on the agreed date, ready to return to its place, with the photographic record of arrival and delivery.

Frequently asked questions

Can I simply trim the damaged fringes?

We advise against it. The fringe is the rug's warp, and cutting it leaves the end knots loose so the design starts to unravel. If the fringes are already very short or broken, the right approach is to secure the knots or apply a new fringe. The master tells you what suits your piece.

Will the new fringe look like the original?

We choose cotton or wool thread close to the original in thickness and tone, and sew it by hand. An applied fringe looks clean and even, though up close it can be told apart from the original. For the most faithful result on a fine piece, rebuilding from the warp is the right option.

Can I repair the fringes without washing the rug?

It is possible, but we recommend washing first. Clean wool shows its true colour, which lets us match the overcasting tone precisely. Sewing over dust and grit also traps dirt inside the repair. If your rug was washed recently, the master checks it and tells you whether the repair alone is enough.
