Persian rug restoration and repair

Rug restoration done by hand

A hole, a patch eaten by moths or a worn corner is not the end of a rug. With wool in the right tone and the original knotting technique, a master can rebuild the piece and give it back its strength. Restoration in our workshop is carried out by masters with more than 40 years of craft in Persian rugs.

What we restore

  • Reknotting holes, knot by knot, using the same knot type and a density close to the original.
  • Moth damage, removing damaged wool, cleaning the area and rebuilding the pile.
  • Reweaving of warp and weft where the foundation is broken or open.
  • Dye touch up on faded or worn areas, with dyes tested first on the same wool.
  • Stabilising weak areas so the damage does not spread.

Wool for restoration is chosen and dyed for each piece. The master compares the tone in natural light, on the washed wool, before tying the first knot.

We aim for the restoration to blend into the design. We are honest with you: on very old or very fine pieces, a repair may be visible on close inspection. We explain this before we begin, with photographs of the area.

Diagnosis, approval and tracking

Restoration is part of our seven step process. First we collect the piece, diagnose it and photograph it. Then we dust and wash it, because clean wool shows its true colour and lets us match the tone precisely. After the centrifuge and controlled drying, the master restores and reviews. Finally we deliver the rug wrapped and sealed.

Every piece receives a KR tracking code from the moment it arrives. You receive photographs of the damage before the repair and of the result when it is finished. We do not begin any work until you approve the quote and the scope.

Pickup and quotes

Pickup and delivery are included at no extra cost in Polanco, Lomas de Chapultepec, Bosques de las Lomas, Tecamachalco, Interlomas, Huixquilucan and the west of the city. To request a quote, send us on WhatsApp a photo of the front and one of the back, the size and your colonia. Add a close photo of the damage, from the front and from behind. With that we give you a time range and a written quote. The final figure is confirmed at diagnosis.

If you notice moths, act soon. Keep the rug away from other wool pieces and write to us. We are available Sunday to Friday.

Process

Our seven step process

Process
  1. Step 1. Collection

We collect your rug on the agreed date, in Polanco, Las Lomas, Interlomas and the west of the city, at no extra cost. We roll it with care, never folded, and give you its tracking code.

  2. Step 2. Diagnosis and photography

On arrival at the workshop, the master inspects fiber, dyes, foundation, fringes and edges. We photograph front and back, record every detail and share the diagnosis with you before any work begins.

  3. Step 3. Deep dusting

We remove the dust and grit that settle deep in the foundation and wear the fiber down with every footstep. It is the step most often skipped, and the one that most protects the life of a rug.

  4. Step 4. Washing

Wool pieces go through our industrial automatic washer, with abundant water and neutral detergents. Silk and delicate pieces are washed by hand, by the master, with the time each one asks for.

  5. Step 5. Centrifuge and controlled drying

The industrial centrifuge removes water evenly, without twisting or stretching the weave. The rug then dries laid flat in a controlled environment, to prevent odors, shrinkage and dye bleeding.

  6. Step 6. Restoration and the master's review

If the diagnosis called for it and you approved it, the master repairs fringes, edges and weave with wool and technique true to the piece. Before leaving, every rug receives a final review, inch by inch.

  7. Step 7. Wrapped and sealed delivery

We photograph the finished piece, roll it, wrap it and seal it. We deliver it to your home on the agreed date, ready to return to its place, with the photographic record of arrival and delivery.

Frequently asked questions

Will the repair be visible?

We aim for the restoration to blend into the design, using the same knot type and wool dyed to match the tone. On most rugs in daily use it cannot be seen at a glance. On very old or very fine pieces it may be visible up close. We explain this before we begin, with photographs.

Can you repair moth damage?

Yes. First we wash the piece to remove eggs and larvae, and we check the back, where damage is often greater. Then the master removes the damaged wool and rebuilds the pile knot by knot. We also recommend the moth protection treatment, especially if the rug goes back to a dim or little used room.

How do you quote a restoration?

With photographs of the front, the back and a close up of the damage, plus the rug size and your colonia, we give you a range on WhatsApp. The final quote is confirmed at diagnosis, once the master has the piece in hand. We carry out no work until you approve the scope and the cost.
