Care for Persian, wool and silk rugs

Persian rugs that call for a master's judgement

A hand knotted Persian rug is not washed like a carpet. Its wool may come from different regions, its dyes may be vegetable or synthetic, and its foundation may be cotton, wool or silk. Each combination asks for different handling. Many of these rugs have passed from one generation to the next, and the family wants to keep them that way.

Our workshop is run by masters with more than 40 years of craft in Persian rugs. Before any water touches the rug, they read the knot type, the density, the condition of the foundation and any earlier repairs. That reading decides the washing method.

A colour fastness test before washing

Every rug with strong colours or dyes of uncertain origin goes through a colour fastness test. We dampen a discreet spot of each tone and watch whether the colour moves. If a dye is not stable, we adjust temperature, time and product, or we choose a hand wash. This is how we keep a red from bleeding into an ivory.

Hand washing for silk rugs

Silk is strong when dry and fragile when wet. For that reason silk rugs, silk and wool blends, and antique or delicate pieces never go into the automatic washer. They are washed by hand, section by section, with pH neutral products and water at a controlled temperature. Excess water is then removed with care and the rug dries in our controlled drying room, away from direct sun.

Sturdy wool rugs do benefit from the industrial automatic washer and the centrifuge, which remove grit and water evenly across the whole piece.

Process, pickup and tracking

Every piece follows our seven steps: pickup, diagnosis and photography, deep dusting, washing, centrifuge and controlled drying, restoration and master review, and delivery wrapped and sealed. On arrival it receives a KR tracking code and is photographed front and back. You receive photographs again at the moment of delivery.

Pickup and delivery are included at no extra cost in Polanco, Lomas de Chapultepec, Bosques de las Lomas, Tecamachalco, Interlomas, Huixquilucan and the west of the city. To request a quote, send us on WhatsApp a photo of the front, one of the back, the size and your colonia. If you know where the rug was made, share that too. It helps us prepare the diagnosis.

Process

Our seven step process

Process
  1. Step 1. Collection

We collect your rug on the agreed date, in Polanco, Las Lomas, Interlomas and the west of the city, at no extra cost. We roll it with care, never folded, and give you its tracking code.

  2. Step 2. Diagnosis and photography

On arrival at the workshop, the master inspects fiber, dyes, foundation, fringes and edges. We photograph front and back, record every detail and share the diagnosis with you before any work begins.

  3. Step 3. Deep dusting

We remove the dust and grit that settle deep in the foundation and wear the fiber down with every footstep. It is the step most often skipped, and the one that most protects the life of a rug.

  4. Step 4. Washing

Wool pieces go through our industrial automatic washer, with abundant water and neutral detergents. Silk and delicate pieces are washed by hand, by the master, with the time each one asks for.

  5. Step 5. Centrifuge and controlled drying

The industrial centrifuge removes water evenly, without twisting or stretching the weave. The rug then dries laid flat in a controlled environment, to prevent odors, shrinkage and dye bleeding.

  6. Step 6. Restoration and the master's review

If the diagnosis called for it and you approved it, the master repairs fringes, edges and weave with wool and technique true to the piece. Before leaving, every rug receives a final review, inch by inch.

  7. Step 7. Wrapped and sealed delivery

We photograph the finished piece, roll it, wrap it and seal it. We deliver it to your home on the agreed date, ready to return to its place, with the photographic record of arrival and delivery.

Frequently asked questions

How do you know if my rug is silk?

The master identifies it during diagnosis by its sheen, its hand, the knot density and the back. Some rugs look like silk but are art silk or mercerised cotton, which behave differently in water. If you are unsure, send us a close photo of the back and we will give you a first opinion.

What if the colours in my rug run?

That is why we run a colour fastness test before washing. If a dye is not stable, we change the method, the temperature and the product, or we wash by hand in sections. If the rug already arrives with bleeding from an earlier wash, we show you in photos and explain what can realistically be improved.

Do you wash antique or inherited rugs?

Yes, with particular care. An antique piece may have a weakened foundation, worn areas or old repairs. The master decides whether a hand wash is better and whether anything should be stabilised before it gets wet. You receive photographs of the diagnosis and approve any additional work before we carry it out.
